A Re-Examination of ADD/ADHD and Childhood Behavior Concerns: A Systems-Based Holistic Approach to Addressing ADD and ADHD (Attention Deficit Disorder) Symptoms and Behaviors

Presented by Jed Shlackman, Licensed Mental Health Counselor, Miami, Florida. Jed has previously worked in Miami-Dade Public Schools and with the agency PsychSolutions in Coral Gables, gaining extensive experience counseling children and families coping with ADD/ADHD concerns. Jed has worked in the Miami area as a therapist since 1997 and has extensive experience and expertise in addressing ADD/ADHD issues in a safe, natural, and holistic manner. Jed presently works in private practice in Miami, Florida, offering outpatient therapy in the Kendall/South Miami area as well as on-site therapy and phone consultations. Jed is a graduate of the University of Miami, where he studied psychology and school counseling with a mental health counseling curriculum and additional education courses.

The subject of ADHD and its treatment has been one of ongoing debate, though there is a mainstream "establishment" model of ADHD treatment which is based on flawed assumptions and is discredited upon honest analysis of the range of research that is available on the topic of ADHD/ADD treatment. A report described in 2009 by a Washington Post article relates that "New data from a large federal study have reignited a debate over the effectiveness of long-term drug treatment of children with hyperactivity or attention-deficit disorder, and have drawn accusations that some members of the research team have sought to play down evidence that medications do little good beyond 24 months. The study also indicated that long-term use of the drugs can stunt children's growth." This report merely scratches the surface of the misdirection and corruption of the ADHD/ADD treatment establishment. Not only is there compelling evidence of the hazards of drug treatments and their inability to generate any lasting benefits, but there have been systemic efforts to ignore and downplay findings about the effectiveness of alternative treatments and therapies and the role of various psychosocial and biochemical stressors in fostering cognitive and behavioral difficulties. If you are looking to learn about ADHD treatment without medications then you have a great opportunity to learn more by exploring the resources you'll find here. There is no cost for you to educate yourself. This holistic, in-depth approach to these issues offers real solutions and healing - shifting consciousness, energy, and lifestyle patterns provides keys to healing and well-being. Only with a meaningful, multi-dimensional understanding of a phenomenon can we adequately address it. If you have a child exhibiting the symptoms associated with ADD or ADHD or if you are an adult experiencing difficulties associated with these patterns, there is a lot that can be done to foster improvement and success with overcoming any "deficits" or impairments that have been experienced.

ADD, ADHD, ADDH, Attention Deficit Disorder - Counseling, Therapy, and Natural, Alternative Treatments in Miami, South Florida

By thoroughly examining this topic, it is intended that the public may become aware of the following concerning patterns of behavior commonly labeled ADD or ADHD

- Understand these behaviors as often indicative of difficulties with self-regulation and balancing.

- Recognize that the mind and body are an integrated feedback system.

- Learn to decode this feedback rather than merely suppressing the behaviors for short term convenience.

- Value the individual's self-healing instincts and coping skills.

- Understand how stressors and traumas can lead to reactions of hypervigilance or scattered attention (overstimulated nervous system and adrenal glands)

- Recognize how lack of nurturance can lead to reactions of excessive stimulation-seeking behaviors

- Learn how nurturing the body, enhancing family relationships, and managing stress help restore balance and resolve ADD/ADHD symptoms.

- Recognize that stress is a quality of experience that can be triggered by anything that disrupts routine or threatens the sense of balance and well-being within an individual or system.

- Identify potential benefits of the following:

> Physical Exercise

> Massage, Bodywork, & Energywork

> Oriental Movement Arts

> Nutrition

> Meditation & Mindfulness Practices

> Time In Nature

> Detoxification

> Family bonding

> Hypnotherapy & healing early traumas

> Neurofeedback

> Energy Psychology

> Nurturing creativity

> Light and Sound

> Relaxation & Stress Management

- Understand how the interaction of the individual with his/her environment shapes brain development and brain activity.

- Conceptualize ADD/ADHD functioning as part of a continuum of functioning that tends to be fostered or augmented by an individual's reaction to certain types of environmental variables - not a "disorder" pre-ordained by genetics or any other specific factor.

- Recognize how behavioral and pharmacological interventions may impair emotional development and maturation if used in place of interventions suited to building internal locus of control and coping skills.

- Examine how current major approaches to "managing" ADD/ADHD symptoms may perpetuate the underlying patterns within the individual and the environment that give rise to the perceived dysfunctional behaviors, regardless of short term success in suppressing symptoms.

- Recognize how mental health diagnoses are based upon subjective comparisons to social norms rather than upon an objective definition of "disorder."

- Examine assumptions inherent in common efforts to get individuals to conform or adapt to social demands and the role of individuality in society.

- Understand how the standard methods of diagnosing and categorizing behaviors often limit the practitioner's ability to analyze the circumstances surrounding the client's state of functioning as well as the ability to recognize the range of interventions that are likely to facilitate positive growth and transformation in the client.

- Generate hypotheses and examine existing research about the comparative effects of interventions, focusing on identifying which approaches are likely to produce permanent or lasting resolution of disturbances.

If you would like to gather with others seeking education and support for addressing attention deficit ADD/ADHD issues you may contact this clinician at jshlackm@phinsights.com. If there is sufficient interest, a group forum will be provided to help those seeking holistic ways of addressing ADHD support one another and explore available resources; holistic methods can be explored with or without concurrent conventional therapies. This practitioner has no affiliation with national organizations that focus on ADHD, while members of any ADHD-related organizations in S. Florida are welcome to participate in forums and exchange ideas and information on this topic. Anyone who is a child psychologist or pediatric psychiatrist in the Miami area would be encouraged to contribute to these discussions so that we can all learn from one another's experience and research. If your child has been labeled as ADD or ADHD you may wish to seek assistance from experienced professionals in helping address these concerns in ways that are safe and empowering. Jed Shlackman, LMHC is also available to share with existing groups on the topic of holistic approaches to ADHD. Call 305-259-0013 for a consult.
